Illusions | Menier Gallery | 13 – 26 September 2017

An open submission Exhibition presented by The Artists Pool

‘Going beyond the surface, exploring the illusions of life, the change of art, time, fashion, environment and the perception we’re fed, what is reality and what isn’t ? Does reality still exists in the age of technology and the changing times of social media?  Can we trust our own eyes?’

Solo show | Bridegroom | CTS Bookshop 15 – 26 August 2017

‘The 11 paintings in Bridegroom focus on the figure of Christ in the Gospels, and particularly on God as love. They are in a range of materials and techniques from classical iconography to a figurative expressionism.’

1. Supper at Emmaus. The grace of Christian marriage is a fruit of Christ’s cross, the source of all life. This is what the Apostle makes clear when he says, “Husbands love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. CCC 1615-16

3. Crucufixion. I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with jewels. Is 61.10

6. Lamp (Holy Spirit in Flames). In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth Ps 19: 4-6

7. Image of Pity. Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. Mk 2:19-20

Exhibiting four works: Supper at Emmaus, egg tempera, 2017; Annunciation, oil on board 2017; Descent into Hell, 2017; Baptism of Christ, pencil on paper, 2016

‘A re-working and follow on of the exhibition  held in the Jesuit Hurtado Centre, Wapping and the Mount Street Jesuit Centre, over two weekends in April 2017.

The initative was pioneered by a very dedicated team at the Hurtado Centre and held in conjunction with the artists of St Patrick’s Studios, based in the parish in Wapping. It has brought together nearly 30 artists from different Christian denominations and artistic backgrounds in a very joyful project.

The aims were to give a taste of the Resurrection as an invitation of the restoration that God offers every day to all humanity, to taste what it is like to be restored in the fullness of life in Christ.

It is hoped that the richness of the works exhibited at Our Lady of Dolours will give a felt sense of the beauty of the Resurrection.

We are extremely grateful to the Servite Friars for enabling us to continue with this exhibition in the beautiful setting of the colonnade which will allow many more people to see it.’

Resurrection Exhibition | Farm Street Jesuit Church | 28-30 April 2017

Curating and hanging show with St Patricks Studios team and Hurtado Jesuit Centre. Exhibiting four works: Supper at Emmaus, egg tempera, 2017; Annunciation, oil on board 2017; Descent into Hell, 2017; Baptism of Christ, pencil on paper, 2016

‘To give a taste of the Resurrection is to give the invitation of restoration that God offers everyday to all humanity. The Hurtado Centre’s Resurrection Exhibition has at its heart the ambitious goal of inviting people into an experience of the Resurrection itself, to taste what it is like to be restored in the fullness of humanity. If it succeeds even to some extent, it will have been more than worthwhile.
Artists from many different Christian and artistic backgrounds have contributed works that convey the history of salvation of which the Resurrection is the culmination. We hope that the richness of their work will give a felt sense of the beauty of the Resurrection. Art has a special vocation to show forth truths which words alone are inadequate to express. As Pope Benedict XVI said:
‘Reason alone as it’s expressed in the sciences can’t be man’s complete answer to reality, and it can’t express everything that man can, wants to, and has to express. I think God built this into man. Art along with science is the highest gift God has given him.” (Salt of the Earth: The Church at the End of the Millennium, Ignatius Press, San Francisco, 1997, p. 47)’

The Merciful Father | Our Lady & St.Catherine of Siena RC Church | February 2017

Installing the Merciful Father, Our Lady St Catherine of Siena RC Church, Bow, London E3

Fr Javier expressed great satisfaction with the arrival of the Merciful Father to Bow, describing the work as “a generous gift which enhances the beauty of our Church”. Contemplating the eventual location of the canvas above the confessional  he writes “…the painting speaks about the mercy of God the Father. It is telling  that the only place we could hang a 11ft by 9ft painting is over the door of the confessional. It seems that looking at this painting and reflecting  on God’s embrace of us is the step before receiving that same loving embrace of the Father through sacramental reconciliation”.
